Significance 2 : The degree of probability that an apparent difference between two sets of data may be regarded as a "real" difference and not merely a chance difference attributable to inherent variability. If, for example, measurements of the bursting pressure of two batches of fire hose give different average results, the difference may be due either to variability in the behaviour of the hose or to a real difference between the batches
