Sinkholes 6

Sinkholes 6 : These hazards occur where the underlying geologic structure is mostly composed of rocks that are relatively easily dissolved by ground water, such as limestone and any carbonate rock. Over a long period of time, a sufficient volume of rock will dissolve, and gaps and caverns result. At a certain critical point, the overlying weight of the built structure or surface material becomes too heavy to be supported by the cavernous geological structure, and a collapse occurs. In some cases, whole houses and swimming pools have been reduced to rubble as they have collapsed into massive sinkholes. (See article: "Environmental geology")
