Smoke 03

Smoke 03 : (Comb) A visible, nonluminous, airborne suspension of particles, originating from combustion or sublimation. Combustion smoke is the visible fraction of airborne combustion products. The invisible fraction of the combustion products, which invariably accompanies smoke, consists of various gases and vapors. Smoke consists largely of soot particles ranging from 10 to 0. 001 micron in size and is produced by incomplete combustion of carbonaceous materials such as wood, coal, or oil. The carbon particles readily absorb the gases and vapors present in the products of combustion and thus become carriers of substances that are often toxic or irritant. Smoke generally contains other kinds of dry particles such as ash, as well as liquid or tarry droplets. Note: The composition and quantity of smoke depend on the material that is burning, the temperature of the combustion process, the availability oxygen, and in special cases or pressure as well. Smoke color and odor may indicate the nature of the fuel. Dense black smoke may indicate large quantities of carbon particles, such as from burning rubber, oil, tar, etc. ; brown smoke may indicate nitrous fumes; yellowish-gray smoke may be a precursor to a back draft. Paper and cloth yield gray smoke. Almost all smoke tends to appear white in cold weather. Smoke from rubber, feathers, and many other materials have strong characteristic odors
