Smoke Inhalation 1 : (Eire Pr; Ned) Breathing in of smoke particles and combustion fumes. Note: Medically, smoke is viewed as consisting of a particulate fraction and a gaseous fraction. Most of the particulate fraction is trapped on the mucous membranes of the mouth, nose, and upper airways of the respiratory tract. The gaseous fraction penetrates deeper into the lungs, where irritants can cause damage or be absorbed and lead to more extensive injury in the body
