Solvent 03

Solvent 03 : (Chem) A material, generally liquid, capable of dissolving another material (solute) to form a homogenous, single-phase solution. The solvent is usually present in larger quantities than the solute. Note: A chemical solvent is one that reacts chemically with a solute. A physical solvent is one that does not react chemically. A polar solvent, such as water, consists of molecules that exert local electrical forces, causing acids, bases, and salts to dissociate into ions, forming electrically conducting solutions called electrolytes. A nonpolar solvent, usually a hydrocarbon, consists of molecules that do not have dipole moments and is therefore unaffected by an electrical field
