Solvent 27 : The part of a solution which is present in excess, or has a physical state the same as that of the solution. A liquid capable of dissolving another to form a single phase solution, e. g. water is the appropriate solvent of most salts, ether of fats, alcohols of resins, etc. A chemical solvent reacts chemically with the solute, a physical solvent does not. Widely used industrial solvents include methyl and ethyl alcohols, methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), acetone, etc
