Sounding Pipes

Sounding Pipes : Pipes fatted to all cargo holds, peaks and ballast tanks, for ascertaining the depth of water in them. They usually extend to the upper deck and are closed by a screwed plug. Soundings are taken by passing a rod, 0. 9 - 1. 2 m (3 - 4 ft) long, to which a cord is attached down the pipe, and noting on its withdrawal how much of the rod is wet. Air pipes sometimes serve also as sounding pipes and sounding pipes as air pipes
