Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) :
A measure of the strength and phase of the southern oscillation, which indicates the status of the Walker circulation. The SOI is calculated from the monthly or seasonal fluctuations in the air pressure difference between Tahiti and Darwin. The "typical" Walker circulation pattern has an SOI close to zero
