Autoconvective Lapse Rate

Autoconvective Lapse Rate :

(Meteor) A lapse rate sufficiently high to cause overturning of a stratified layer of air. Undisturbed air remains static even when the lapse rate exceeds the adiabatic rate of 5. 5oF per 1000 feet. The critical lapse rate for overturning is 37. 17oC per kilometer, or almost 19oF per 1000 feet. Steep lapse rates cause whirlwinds and dust devils. Syn: Autoconvection Gradient. Note: Lapse rate in a homogeneous atmosphere is equal to g/R, where g is the acceleration of gravity and R is the gas constant. For dry air this is approx 3. 4 x 10-4oC/cm
