Suture Sizes

Suture Sizes : Suture sizes are stated in both traditional and metric units. The traditional size numbers take into account more than diameter; they consider the tensile strength and other factors as well, so that sutures of the same size perform similarly in the body even if the diameter differs. The traditional sizes are numbers greater than or less than zero, but the negative sizes are indicated by "-0" after the number rather than a minus sign in front of it. Thus the scale from smaller to larger sizes is ...4-0, 3-0, 2-0, ..., 2, 3, 4, ... The metric size number is simply the diameter of the suture in tenths of a millimeter. Since this does not consider tensile strength, surgeons do not have a fixed conversion between traditional and metric sizes
