Target Industry Profiles

Target Industry Profiles :

Administration (OSHA) developed a 5-year Strategic Management Plan that directs the Agency's resources towards three over-reaching goals, one of which focuses on the reduction of occupational injuries, illness, and fatalities. By 2008, OSHA's goal is to reduce the rates of workplace fatalities by at least 15 percent and workplace injuries and illnesses by at least 20 percent. Each year, OSHA will emphasize specific areas to achieve this broader goal. In Fiscal Year (FY) 2003-2004, OSHA will reduce construction fatalities by 3 percent, general industry fatalities by 1 percent and overall injuries and illnesses by 4 percent. Emphasis will be on high incident/high severity industries, amputations in manufacturing and construction, ergonomics, blood-lead levels and silica-related disease. To accomplish the goals of fatality, injury, and illness reduction set forth in the Strategic Management Plan, an effort was made to identify a list of industries with high injury/illness rates and a high proportion of severe injuries/illnesses for focused targeting of outreach and enforcement activity. Several criteria were used in the identification of these industries. These criteria were as follows: Industries with at least 5,000 total injury and illness cases in Calendar Year (CY) 2000; Industries with a lost workday injury/illness rate (LWDII) of 3.0 or greater in CY 2000; Industries not in construction; Industries with no more than 30% of injuries and illnesses involving days away from work caused by ergonomic events; and Industries with at least 50% of injuries and illnesses involving days away from work so severe as to result in at least six days away from work. Based on these criteria, seven industries were selected to be used in targeting direct interventions, for inclusion in the strategic surveillance program, and for use as performance measures. The industries that met these criteria are: (1) Landscape and Horticultural Services [View the PDF (299Kb)]; (2) Oil and Gas Well Drilling and Servicing [View the PDF (140Kb)]; (3) Preserved Fruits and Vegetables [View the PDF (116Kb)]; (4) Primary Metals and Basic Steel Products [View the PDF (167Kb)]; (5) Ship and Boat Building and Repair [View the PDF (330Kb)]; (6) Public Warehousing and Storage [View the PDF (116Kb)]; (7) Concrete and Concrete Products [View the PDF (252Kb)].
