Thermodynamics 1 : (Thermodyn) The branch of physics that deals with the relations between heat and mechanical, chemical, and electromagnetic energy in systems and the conversion of one into the other. Thermodynamics is concerned with matter and energy in bulk, and systems in thermal equilibrium. Note: The basic principles are expressed as: (1) heat and work are related quantitatively; (2) heat flows naturally from a hotter body to a cooler one; and (3) every substance has an entropy, a measure of the order in its system
