Threatened Species 1 : Any plants or animals that are likely to become endangered species within the foreseeable future throughout all or a significant portion of their ranges and which have been listed as threatened by the US Fish and Wildlife Service or the National Marine Fisheries Service following the procedures set out in the Endangered Species Act and its implementing regulations (50 CFR 424). Note: Some states also list species as threatened. Thus, in certain cases a state definition would also be appropriate
