Backfire 01 : (1) (For Serv) a. A fire set to burn 'off fuel in the path of an advancing wildland fire in order to stop its progress. Typically, a backfire is set inside a fire control line to reduce the fuel between the line and the fire edge. Syn: Back Burn; Control Fire. See: Clean Burn. b. = (Brit counter fire. c. To set such a fire. Cf: area ignition; burnout. (2) (Techn) A loud noise made by an internal combustion engine due to faulty ignition or explosion of fuel in the exhaust manifold
