Backscattering 1

Backscattering 1 :

Radiation and Radiological Disasters. (Phys) The scattering of particles or radiant energy at angles exceeding 900 from the original direction of motion. Nonelastic x-ray backscattering is used in the analysis of atomic and molecular composition of matter, while elastic backscattering is used to determine the thickness of surface coatings. Syn: Backward Scattering. Cf: Forward Scattering. Note: The measurement of backscattering is important for counting beta particles in ionization chambers, in medical radiation treatment, and in industrial radioisoto pic thickness gauging
