(Fire Pr) A symbol of rank in the fire service, dating from the time speaking trumpets were used to give voice commands at fires. Also called: Bugle. See also|: Ranks and Titles. Note: Senior officers wear gold insignia with crossed trumpets, junior officers wear silver insignia with trumpets not crossed. common usage is as follows: Five gold - chief of department, Four gold - deputy or assistant chief (whichever is higher), Three gold - deputy or assistant chief, Two gold - battalion or district chief, Two silver captain, One silver - lieutenant
