Trumpet 2 : A symbol of rank in the fire service dating from the time speaking trumpets were used to give voice commands at fires; a chief officer wears a gold insignia with crossed trumpets, a junior officer wears a silver insignia with uncrossed trumpets, the chief of department wears five gold, the deputy or assistant chief wears four gold; lower rank wears three gold, the battalion or district chief wears two gold, the captain wears two silver, and the lieutenant wears one silver.
