Bacteriophage 1 : (Bact) An ultramicroscopic agent that attacks bacteria. Phages are generally parasitic, filterable viruses, highly specific as to the species of bacteria they attack. Phages, their structure, and mechanism of attack have been visualized by electron microscopy. They generally alter the chromosomes of bacteria in propagating them-selves and destroy their hosts in the process
