Unemployment Insurance : A guarantee that workers will receive unemployment benefit when they have lost their jobs and therefore their wages. Schemes may be compulsory or voluntary, financed exclusively by contributions (from workers or from both employers and workers), or by contributions and subsidies from the state. Unemployment insurance schemes can be managed by the state, by the social partners, or by a private insurance firm
