Ball Lightning 1 : (Meteor) A form of lightning described as a small, luminous ball that may move rapidly, float in midair, or have a tendency to enter enclosures. The ball emitshissing sounds, and may explode noisily or disappear silently. Also called: Globe Ightning. See: Lightning; St Elmo's Fire. Note: Statistical studies indicate that ball lightning may be almost as common as ordinary lightning, but is rarely observed because of its small size.
