Valence 1

Valence 1 : Chemistry and Chemical Disasters. (Chem) a. A number characterizing the combining power of one element with another, expressed as the number of atoms of hydrogen (or their equivalent) that will combine with or be replaced by the atom in question. For example, two hydrogen atoms combine with one oxygen atom to form water. Each hydrogen atom has a valence of 1 and the oxygen atom has a valence of (2) Nitrogen has a valence of 2, 3, 4, and 5, respectively, in NO, NH3, NO2, and N205. b. Polar valence is the excess of positive or negative charges on an atom or radical. c. Nonpolar valence is the number of electron pairs shared with other atoms
