Valency

Valency : The valency of an element is measured by the number of hydrogen atoms which unites with one atom of that element. Some elements do not combine with hydrogen, and in those cases the valency is measured indirectly by combination with an element whose valency is known. Hydrogen is the unit of combining power, and from the substances HCI, H2O, NH3, CH4, it is seen tat chlorine is monovalent, oxygen divalent, nitrogen trivalent, and carbon tetravalent. Atoms re chemically indivisible, therefore the valency of an element must be a whole number. An element may show a variable valency in its compounds with the same element, or in compounds with different elements
