Valve, Pressure Relief 1 : (1) A valve which is designed to operate automatically when a critical pressure is exceeded. (2) (Hydr). A valve designed to open by hydraulic force and feed water through a by-pass back to the intake if a pre-determined pressure is exceeded. A relief valve is used, for example on a fire pump to prevent excessive pressure when a nozzle is shut down
