Vaporising Liquid Extinguishing Agents

Vaporising Liquid Extinguishing Agents : A name commonly used for a number of halogenated hydrocarbons which are liquid are or above normal room temperature but vaporize readily on heating forming a dense, heavier-than-air vapour which is non-flammable. This not only blankets the fire but the heat breaks down the halogenated compound into reactive hydride radicals which interfere with the chemical reaction of flame propagation. They are non-conductors of electricity and can therefore be used on electrical fires. They are toxic and the more toxic agent carbon tetrachloride and methyl bromide are no longer recommended. The compounds with a fluorine content (the Freons) are less toxic usually. Examples, Bromotrifluoromethane, chlorobromomethane, bromochloro-difluoromethane. See also: Halons
