Vapour Cloud Explosion 1 : A cloud of vapours which when ignited can not expand freely results a significant overpressure and explosion. In general terms explosions tend to be more serious since they have the potential to cause fatalities more readily than fires due to the short duration energy release which gives no time for evasive action to be taken by personnel. In the event of a fire, escape is often possible due to the time taken for the spread of the fire to occur
