Variance 01 :
(1) (Build) A deviation from a building code or standard, usually granted on the basis of evidence or assurance that the deviation does not materially conflict with the sense or intent of the code or standard. (2) (Env Prot) A license, granted by government, permitting an exception to some restriction of use, such as pollution beyond the acceptable limit, in return for a promise to curb pollution at a later time. (3) (Statist) The square of the standard deviation. A measure of the variability of a set of data points calculated by squaring the differences between the individual values and their mean and dividing the sum of these squares by the number of values minus (1) Also called: Second Moment About The Mean.
