Volcanic Gases 2
Volcanic Gases 2 : Compounds and elements that were previously dissolved in the magma while under great pressure, and which are released as volatiles during a volcanic eruption. The gases are released when pressure is decreased as the magma reaches the surface. Most common constituents of the gases are water vapor and carbon dioxide; other constituents include sulfur dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, hydrogen chloride, and nitrogen as a free element. In addition tto its dependence on viscosity and composition of the lava, the explosiveness of a volcanic eruption is to a large degree determined by the proportion of gaseous material in the magma
