A general term that applies to a volcano's behavior when it departs from its usual or background level of activity, as evidenced by visible or instrumentally measurable changes - seismic, geodetic, or geochemical - in the state of the volcano from volcano-monitoring studies. However, not all episodes of volcanic unrest, which can last from a few days to a few decades, culminate in eruptive activity
