Barbiturate 1 :
Medical. (Pharm) A central nervous system depressant or sedative derived from barbituric acid. Barbiturates can be classified into three groups according to the duration of their effects and action: (1) barbital and phenobar bital are long-lasting sleep inducers; (2) amytal, nembutal,seconal, etc. are intermediate-term hypnotics; and (3) thiopentone pentothal hexobarbital, etc. are strong, short-term intravenous anesthetics. Note: Barbiturates are habit-forming and are often involved in suicides. Acute barbiturate intoxication results in failure of the involuntary reflexes, depressed respiration, and coma. Death results from respiratory paralysis or vascular collapse. Victims require immediate medical attention
