Wall Openings 2 : (1) Permitted openings (Building Regulations, 1976 England and Wales) in separating walls are a) for pipes providing the diameter is not larger than 38 mm if combustible and 150 mm (the pipe) diam. if non-combustible. The opening must be firestopped. b) a door, must have the same fire resistance as the wall. (2) Permitted openings between compartments are restricted. Access doors from flats to a common landing must have 30 min. fire check standard and any other doors must have the same fire resistance as specified for the wall it is in. Similarly for shutters, traps, etc. Standards are specified for shafts, openings for ventilation ducts, refuse chutes, pipes, chimneys, appliance ducts and ducts encasing flue pipes
