Barometer 1

Barometer 1 : (Metrol) An instrument for measuring the absolute pressure of the atmosphere. The common meteorological barometer consists of a glass tube filled with mercury with one end sealed. The other end is open and immersed in a reservoir of mercury. Changes in atmospheric pressure cause corresponding changes in the height of the mercury column. Note: The same device used to measure pressure in a closed system is called a manometer. Liquids other than mercury can be used. The sensitivity is inversely proportional to the density of the liquid. Barometer readings should be corrected for temperature and altitude. See also: Aneroid
