Water Spout

Water Spout : (Meteor) A rapidly whir-ling, funnel-shaped vortex over the sea or inland lakes, extending from several hundred to several thousand feet from a cumulus-type cloud to the water surface. Note: The spout can be several feet to several hundred feet thick. The funnel consists of atmospheric moisture and spray drawn up from the water surface. The interior of the funnel is below atmospheric pressure due to the rotation, which can induce wind speeds up to 600 mph. See: Wind
