Web Map Service (WMS)
Web Map Service (WMS) : Web Map Service (WMS) is the specification of a collaborative effort assembled by the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) for the publication of spatial data in form of maps (rasterdata) in the web. It defines 3 methods providing uniform access by Web clients to maps: getCapabilities (service request); getMap (map request); getFeatureinfo (attribute request). GetCapabilities requests information of the capabilities of the WMS while responding to a getMap request. GetFeatureinfo delivers attribute information relating to the objects displayed in the maps. Almost all of the GISproducers and also free software projects provide a WMS interface. (see also internet Map Server)
