Base 01

Base 01 : Chemistry and Chemical Disasters. (1) (Chem) a. An oxide or hydroxide of a metal that yields hydroxyl ions in an aqueous solution. b. A substance that reacts with acid to form salt and water. c. Any species capable of accepting a proton or giving up an unshared pair of electrons to an acid. Syn: Alkali. Cf: Acid. (2) (Math) An integer, the powers of which are used as column values in a numeric system, the base integer being the value of the column to the left of the units column; e. g. , the ten's column in the decimal system or the two's column in binary. A system based on five's (biquinary notation) is used in the abacus. Also called: Radix. See: Number Systems. Note: In ordinary decimals, with ten as the base, a number such as 321 represents 3 x 102 + 2 x 10 + 1; but this is also equal to 5 x 82 + 0 x 8 + 1, so that using base 8, the decimal number 321 is written 501. (3) (Aerodyn) The extreme aft end of a body. (Geom) The line or surface of a figure on which it is assumed to rest, such as the bottom edge of a triangle or the circular base of a cone
