Aldehyde 1 : (Chem) One of a class of hydrocarbon derivatives obtained by partial oxidation of an alcohol. The general formula is: R-C=0 with I is a standing link above C, and H is connected above the standing link. where R is a hydrocarbon radical. Examples are formaldehyde from methyl alcohol and acetaldehyde from ethyl alcohol. Aldehydes are impor?tant intermediates for the manufacture of resins, plasticizers, solvents, and dyes.
