Alkaloid 1 : (Chem; Ned; Pharm) One of a group of bitter, colorless, nitrogen containing organic bases derived from plants. Many alkaloids, including atropine, morphine, nicotine, cocaine, strychnine, and quinine, are physiologically active, and in quantity are toxic to humans and animals. Note: Alkaloids are used extensively in medicine. For example, atropine, obtained from belladonna, is used to dilate the pupil of the eye, to dry secretions in the airway prior to surgery, nd to relieve spasms. Morphine, derived from opium, is used in hydrochloride or sulfate form as an analgesic and edative. Quinine, obtained from cinchona bark, is used as an antipyretic and antimalarial drug
