Alkane 1

Alkane 1 : (Chem) One of a series of saturated hydrocarbons with the general formula C (n) H (2n+2) , commonly called paraffin. In the formula, C is carbon and n is a whole number. Note: Alkanes with fewer than five carbon atoms are gases at room temperature (e. g. , methane, ethane, propane, and butane); from pentane through hexadecane they are mostly liquid, and above that, waxy solids. The compounds are flammable and are ommon fuels, such as natural gas CH4) and LP gas (mixed C3H8 and C4H10). Gasoline contains substan?tial quantities of alkanes from Cs through C10; kerosene contains alkanes in the C20 range
