Alkane 3 : An aliphatic hydrocarbon having the chemical formula CnH2n+2 A normal alkane, or n-alkane is one which does not have a branched carbon backbone. An iso-alkane has a branched, rather than a straight chain, carbon backbone. Alkanes are also known as paraffins.
