Alph Particle

Alph Particle : (Nucl Phys; Symb: a or ? ++) A small particle with two positive electrical charges thrown off at high velocity by many radioactive materials, such as uranium and radium. An alpha particle consists of two neutrons and two protons and is identical to a helium nucleus. A stream of alpha particles is called an a lpha ray or alpha radiation. Note: Of the three common types of radiation (alpha, beta, and gamma) emitted by radioactive materials, alpha particles are the weakest. They can be stopped by a sheet of paper, by two to three inches of air, or the outer layer of the skin, and hence are not particularly hazardous to plants or animals as long as a emitters are not lodged within the body
