Armature 1 : (1) That part of a machine, whether rotating or stationary, which carries the winding connected to the external supply and in which the principal e. m. f. is induced. This term is usually limited to the rotating part of a D. C. machine. (2) Of a permanent magnet. (Keeper). A piece of ferro-magnetic material placed against the extremities of a permanent magnet so as to complete the magnetic circuit. (3) Of an electromagnet. A body made of ferro-magnetic material arranged in such a way as to be displaced by the magnetic action of the electromagnet
