Brasse
Brasse :
A traditional unit of distance in France, comparable to the English fathom. The brasse is equal to 5 pieds (French feet); using the pied de roi as the standard for the pied this is about 1.624 meters or 5.328 English feet, slightly shorter than the Spanish braza (next entry). Note that the French have another fathom-size unit, the toise, equal to 6 pieds (about 1.949 meters or 6.395 English feet). The brasse was commonly used at sea and the toise on land. The name of the unit is related to bras (arm) and brassée (armful), recalling the traditional definition of the fathom as a man's armspan
