Buff 1 : (Fire Pr) A dedicated fire department friend, helper, or enthusiast. Syn: Spark; sparky; ringer. Note: The term is alleged to have been derived from an early association of young men who called them-selves the Buffalo Corps and who were affiliated with various New York Fire Department companies, serving as helpers and errand boys ("go-fers"). According to Webster's Third International Dictionary (1968), the term is derived from the buff colored overcoats worn by volunteer firemen in New York City circa 1820. Another claim is that the term is derived from buffalo skin coats worn by people watching firefighting operations. In some localities buffs are organized into fire reserves and receive training to help in crowd control, assist regular firefighters in advancing lines, and perform other tasks on the fireground
