Burning Rate 01

Burning Rate 01 : (Comb; Symb: r) The velocity at which a solid or liquid is burned, measured in the direction normal to the surface and usually expressed in inches per second. Also called: Regression. Cf: Burning Velocity (for gases). Note: Burning rates for flammable liquids will vary if they contain light and heavy fractions. Light fractions tend to burn faster, and after they burn off, the remaining heavier fractions burn at a slower rate. Solid propellants often obey the law r = a-p to the power n, where a and n are constants and p is the pressure of combustion. It has been suggested that burning rate be used to express the combustion of a fuel in terms of mass consumed per unit time (equivalent to mass burning rate), and to reserve regression rate to express the combustion of a fuel in terms of length (depth) consumed per unit time
