Capacitor 1

Capacitor 1 : (Electr) An electronic device consisting of two conducting plates separated by a dielectric, used to accumulate and discharge electrical charges for the purpose of limiting current flow, filtering signals, shaping waveforms, tuning circuits, etc. Formerly called: condenser. Note: A common type consists of two or more plates separated by air or other dielectric gaps. Another type is made of strips of foil separated by paper and rolled into tight cylinders (these can be dry or oil-filled) . An electrolytic capacitor consists of two plates and a moist electrolytic paste. The dielectric is a thin film of gas formed by electrolytic action
