Carbon Dioxide (CO2) 17 :
CO2. A colourless gas. Liquid and solid CO2 are much used as a refrigerant, also as a liquid or gas in fire extinguishers, chemical manufacturing and in carbonated beverages. Product of combustion of all carbonaceous substances. In 3-5 per cent concentrations CO2 is a respiratory stimulant, 8-10 per cent asphyxiating and higher concentrations are toxic. Maximum allowable concentration is 5000 ppm for 8 hours. Solid carbon dioxide is known as dry ice. See also: Dry Ice
