Carboxyhemoglobin 1

Carboxyhemoglobin 1 : (Ned; Abb: COHb) Hemoglobin carrying carbon monoxide instead of oxygen. Syn: Carbon Monoxy Hemoglobin. See: Carbonmonoxide. Note: A nonsmoker breathing pure air has about 0. 4% background COHb in his blood. Cases are known of healthy persons surviving with 20 to 40% COHb. However, experiments indicate that mental processes and judgement tend to deterioriate when COHb levels reach 5 to 10%. Persons in poor health, heavy smokers, and those engaged in strenuous activity while breathing air containing CO are more likely to suffer adverse effects than healthy individuals, nonsmokers, and persons at rest
