Cast Iron 2 : An alloy of iron and about 2 to 4 percent carbon. (A) Grey cast iron: The graphite (carbon) is present as flakes. This makes a fracture appear grey. (B) White cast iron: The carbon is present as carbides. With no graphite to color it, a fracture appears metallic white. (COGWE, SSWID)
