Catalytic Cracking 1 : A process used in petroleum refining to convert high-boiling hydrocarbon fractions to lower-boiling fractions suitable for use as gasoline. The first catalysts were natural clays; these were later replaced by synthetic sodium alumino-silicates, and then by zeolites, notably zeolite Y.
