Cathode 07 : The negative electrode in an electrolytic system which attracts the positive ions in solution and discharges them; (1) the electrode by which a direct current is conventionally considered to leave a conducting liquid or gas; (2) Cathode of a thermionic valve: the electrode which emits electrons when heated; (3) Cathode of an X-ray tube: the electrode which emits electrons when directly or indirectly heated.
