Acid 03

Acid 03 : Medicine. (Chem) (1) A typically sourtasting or biting compound that turns blue litmus red and forms salts in reactions with bases. Some acids are very corrosive and attack metals, fabrics, and body tissues. The primary characteristic of an acid is that it can donate a proton or accept an unshared electron pair in a chemical reaction with a base. It is most often an electrolyte that dissociates with the formation of hydrogen ions and corresponding negative ions. This behavior depends on the solvent, which is usually water. Common acids in water are HC1 (hydrochloric), H2SO4 (sulfuric), H3PO4 (phosphoric), and HNO3 (nitric), CH3COOH (acetic), etc. (2) An organic compound containing the -COOH group. Some compounds can be amphoteric; that is, an acid (proton donor) in one system and a base (proton acceptor) in another
